About 90% of my patients who come to my practice in Bedfordview with back pain always ask me “So how do I know if I should go to a Chiropractor or Physiotherapist first?”
In general, most people go to a Physiotherapist first and if they don’t get 100% better, they seek the help of a Chiropractor. However, some people prefer seeing a Chiropractor first. So my answer is: It is a matter of personal choice.
According to the South African Society of Physiotherapy www.physiosa.org.za: “A Physiotherapist is concerned with assessing, treating and preventing human
movement disorders, restoring normal function, or minimising dysfunction and
pain in adults and children with physical impairment, to enable them to achieve
the highest possible level of independence in their lives.”
According to the Chiropractic Association of South Africa www.chiropractic.co.za “Chiropractic is fully integrated as a health care discipline. We are the spinal health care experts in our health care system. What sets us apart is our ability to improve function in the neuromusculoskeletal system, overall health, well being and quality of life. Our profession has adopted a specialised approach to examination, diagnosis and treatment, based on best available research and clinical evidence with particular emphasis on the relationship between the spine and the nervous system. Chiropractors are considered expertly qualified providers of spinal adjustment, manipulation, and other manual treatments.”
Before making your decision of Chiropractor or Physiotherapist, just consider the following:
1. Physiotherapists normally do an adjusting/manipulation course as a short post-graduate course.
Adjustments are fully integrated into the Chiropractic degree –
starting in 3rd year. So Chiropractors practice adjustments for 3 years before doing any adjustments on a patient.
2. Physiotherapists use a variety of tools and equipment to aid mobilisation and in rehabilitation.
Chiropractors focus mainly on healing without the use of drugs and surgery.
3. Some people respond well to Physiotherapy, conversely, some people will respond well to Chiropractic. My suggestion would be: Try out both and decide for yourself which one best suits you!
