Why do I get Pain?

6/3/2015

Do you know that pain is actually a protective mechanism? Pain is a signal that the body has been damaged or that something is wrong and you should stop doing what has caused the pain. As a Chiropractor working at a private practice in Bedfordview, I find that pain is usually the number one cause and reason that patients come to visit me. So here is the big question – Why do I get pain?

The Big Question – Why do I get pain?

Picture
Pain usually starts at the site of injury. When you injure yourself, pain receptors are stimulated, causing chemicals in your body to be released. These chemicals carry the message “it’s sore” directly to the brain via the spinal cord. The brain interprets the pain message and it sends the same message back to the area of injury. This allows you to be consciously aware of your injury and your response is either to stop what you were doing that caused the injury, or to try and protect the area from further damage.

This process usually happens very quickly – within seconds. This is usually known as acute pain. It is usually a short term pain and is usually present after an accident or injury. Once the injury is healed, the pain disappears. There is a second type of pain known as chronic pain. This pain is more persistent, and because it lasts for a long period of time, a person’s sensitivity to pain will be increased. Sometimes a person may perceive a gentle touch as pain. This type of pain usually needs long term treatment and therapy.

Chiropractic treatment can help with both acute and chronic pain.

Chiropractic treatment can help with both acute and chronic pain. However, one must realize that acute pain is much easier to treat as the healing time is much faster. With chronic pain, patients may experience a roller coaster effect, having some good days and some bad days. Treating chronic pain is much more challenging as healing is slow and the body’s response time is reduced.

Top 3 tips to treat pain:

  1. If you have been injured and there is swelling (e.g. sprained your ankle or caught your fingers in the door) - apply an ice pack over the area for 10 minutes at 30 minute intervals as often as possible for 24 to 48 hours.
  2. If you have tension or stiffness in muscles – apply a heat pack/microwave bean bag over the area for 10 minutes at 30 minute intervals or as often as possible for 24 to 48 hours.
  3. Place a cup of Epsom salts in a bath filled with hot water (as hot as you can handle) and soak in it for 20 minutes. Epsom salts helps to bring down inflammation and it eases pain.
Most of the time people are unsure if Chiropractic is for them, so if you are residing or working in the Bedfordview area, we can organise a spinal screening just for you. This way we can determine if Chiropractic can help you with a specific condition or not. For more information contact our receptionist at the Bedfordview practice on 011-455-2488. If you have any other questions or feedback, please feel free to make use of our “contact us” link.
